Nuclear Options

Just as there is no “winning” the war on terror, there is no winning the debate on a nuclear deal with Iran. And it is a “deal,” meaning there is no ideal outcome for either side of the argument. That’s what a “deal” is, a compromise. The only question that really matters is this: would the proposed agreement increase or decrease the probability of a nuclear war? Even the most hawkish NeoCons admit that some restriction on Iranian nuclear capabilities are better than none.

And wouldn’t Israel actually be more secure if there were weapons inspectors combing Iranian nuclear facilities and uranium mines, searching for the tiniest scraps of contraband? Is it better to tighten the screws/sanctions until Iran is so demoralized and depressed that it feels it’s got nothing to lose? Cornered and wounded animals being the most dangerous, that kind of thing.

Is there anything to gain from creating more enemies in the region, more potential terrorists? And to those Chickenhawks who won’t be satisfied until we are carpet bombing Tehran, have we learned nothing from the Bush Crime Family’s failed doctrine of preemptive war? Think of the American blood and treasure that will be lost on yet another doomed battlefront.

And to what end? Are the Rapture Righties this determined to welcome Armegeddon?

Well, it is church night . . . .
